IELTS Writing Task 2 Example: Advantages and Disadvantages Essay

Question:

Some people think that children should begin learning a foreign language at primary school.

Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

Example Answer:

IELTS Writing Task 2 – Band 7.5

Introduction

Many people believe that children should start learning a foreign language at primary school rather than waiting until they are older. Although there are some drawbacks to this approach, I believe the advantages are far greater.

Body Paragraph 1 – Advantages

One major advantage is that young children can learn languages more easily than adults. At an early age, their brains are highly adaptable, allowing them to acquire pronunciation and vocabulary more naturally. As a result, they often develop better communication skills and a higher level of fluency in the long term.

Another benefit is that learning a foreign language can improve cognitive abilities. Studies have shown that bilingual children tend to have stronger memory, problem-solving skills, and creativity. These abilities may also contribute positively to their overall academic performance.

Body Paragraph 2 – Disadvantages

However, there are some disadvantages. One concern is that children may experience additional academic pressure if language classes are introduced too early. Some students may struggle to balance language learning with other subjects.

Furthermore, schools in certain regions may lack qualified teachers or appropriate resources. In such cases, the quality of language education could be limited, reducing its effectiveness.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while introducing foreign languages at primary school may create some challenges, I believe the benefits, including improved language proficiency and cognitive development, clearly outweigh the disadvantages.

IELTS Writing Task 2 – Band 9.0

Introduction

The question of whether children should begin learning a foreign language during primary education remains a subject of debate. While early language instruction may present certain challenges, I strongly believe that its long-term educational and developmental benefits far outweigh any potential drawbacks.

Body Paragraph 1 – Advantages

Perhaps the most significant advantage is that young learners possess a remarkable capacity for language acquisition. During childhood, the brain is particularly receptive to new sounds, grammatical structures, and patterns of communication. Consequently, children who are exposed to a foreign language at an early age are more likely to develop native-like pronunciation and greater linguistic competence later in life.

In addition to language proficiency, early bilingual education can foster broader intellectual development. Research suggests that children who learn multiple languages often demonstrate enhanced cognitive flexibility, stronger critical-thinking abilities, and improved problem-solving skills. These advantages extend beyond language learning and can positively influence performance across a wide range of academic disciplines.

Body Paragraph 2 – Disadvantages and Rebuttal

Admittedly, introducing foreign languages in primary school may increase the workload for some students. Young children already face various educational demands, and additional subjects could potentially create stress or reduce time allocated to other areas of learning.

However, this concern is often overstated. Language instruction at the primary level is typically designed to be interactive and engaging rather than academically demanding. Through games, songs, and communication-based activities, children can acquire language skills in a relatively natural and enjoyable manner. Therefore, the risk of excessive pressure is generally limited.

Conclusion

In conclusion, although early foreign language education may involve certain practical challenges, its contribution to linguistic development, cognitive growth, and future opportunities makes it an overwhelmingly positive educational strategy. For this reason, I believe the advantages unquestionably outweigh the disadvantages.
